Understanding Changes to SSI Benefits

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal assistance program administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). The program provides financial assistance to people with disabilities, blind individuals, and the elderly who have limited income and resources.

Disability Scoop has recently reported on changes to SSI benefits that have been proposed by the SSA. These changes involve excluding food from calculations of “in-kind support and maintenance.” This means that beneficiaries don’t have to worry about accepting gifts of food or meals affecting their benefits. Currently, the rules mean that beneficiaries can lose some of their income unless they buy all of their food themselves.

This change could help those who receive SSI benefits worry less and spend more time enjoying meals with loved ones.
