Retirement is a curious matter. We all look forward to it, yet it can look different once it finally arrives.
For some seniors, life after the workforce is refreshing and invigorating. But others find that something is missing. The feeling of dignity that comes from financial security and respect for one’s contributions to the world is critical as we get older.
We at The Seniors Center work to honor and represent seniors. But what does respect in retirement really mean? In honor of Older Americans Month, we want to discuss all the factors that make up an enjoyable life after the workforce.
Retirement Should Be Respectable, Secure, and Enjoyable
Respect for seniors in the U.S. is often questioned, especially when we look at the challenges they face. Many older Americans struggle with rising costs, inadequate healthcare, and insufficient support. Despite their contributions, society sometimes falls short in providing the dignity they deserve in retirement.
Retirement is meant to be a time of leisure and choice. It shouldn’t be about struggle and stress. Seniors who have worked their whole lives and contributed to Social Security have earned their benefits. Retirement should be about stability and capability. What does retirement look like for you? Would you like to travel? Do you want to spend more time with family? Your retirement goals matter. When you pursue these goals, you feel self-respect and dignity.
Finally, seniors deserve enjoyment and the ability to care for themselves. A key aspect of this idea relates to the restoration of Social Security. Perhaps the biggest problem we face is the mismanagement of this program. One issue is the abandonment of the Trust Fund model, which secures benefits for the future. Another issue is low Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustments (COLAs).
If retirement benefits are protected and restored, seniors can feel respected. What’s more, they can have the resources necessary to make retirement life’s best chapter. The good news is, we can all contribute to a secure retirement.
