Here’s How Much Money a Social Security Cut Could Cost You

Social Security is a vital source of income for millions of older Americans. But if Congress doesn’t act to protect the program, retirees could see a 23 percent cut in their monthly payments in the coming years. Here’s what that could look like, per data provided by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation and Money Talks News:

  • Retired workers currently receive about $2,005 each month. A 23 percent cut would drop that to roughly $1,544.

  • Spouses of retired workers receive an average of $953. That would fall to about $734.

  • Widows and widowers receiving survivor benefits now average $1,863 a month. After a cut, they’d get about $1,435.

  • Children of deceased workers average $1,138 per month. A cut would reduce that to $876.

These numbers aren’t just math – they’re meals, medications, and also peace of mind. That’s why protecting Social Security matters now more than ever! Remember, no matter your age, income, or personal beliefs, we’ve all paid into this program and we all deserve to be paid back in full.
