Social Security COLA Increase: Why Retirees Are Watching October

For retirees who depend on Social Security, October is more than another month on the calendar. It is when the Social Security Administration is expected to reveal the 2027 Social Security COLA increase, giving beneficiaries a clearer picture of how their monthly payments could change next year.

The Cost-of-Living Adjustment is tied to inflation, with the government using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers to determine the annual increase. Changes in consumer prices during the third quarter of 2026 will therefore be especially important. Higher inflation can lead to a larger COLA, while slower price growth can produce a smaller adjustment.

That leaves plenty of room for the final figure to change before the official announcement. Estimates released throughout the year can provide a general idea of what to expect. But retirees will not know the actual COLA until the Social Security Administration completes its calculation.

During their working years, Americans paid Social Security taxes from their paychecks, helping build the benefits they expect to receive in retirement. The retirees of America have a right to this money, as it fairly belongs to them.

For that reason, the conversation should not simply focus on how much the government is increasing payments. It should also recognize that retirees are receiving money they have spent decades working toward. A COLA helps ensure those hard-earned benefits retain as much purchasing power as possible when prices rise.
