Social Security has reached its 90th year — a testament to the program’s enduring importance in the lives of millions of Americans.
Created during the Great Depression, it has been a lifeline for retirees, the disabled, and surviving family members, ensuring dignity and financial stability in later years. But without urgent reforms, its promise could be in jeopardy.
In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act to protect older Americans from poverty in retirement. Funded through payroll taxes, it was designed to be a secure, dependable safety net. Today, it still plays that role, helping seniors cover essentials like housing, food, and healthcare. It also allows for the well-earned luxuries that make retirement truly enjoyable, from traveling to special family gatherings to hobbies and leisure.
However, decades of poor management have weakened the program. The original “Trust Fund” model, meant to safeguard retirement savings, has been abandoned. Now policymakers divert surplus funds for unrelated spending. At the same time, the tax cap on high earners limits the revenue needed to keep the program strong. This combination has led to fears of funding shortfalls and potential benefit cuts.
The solution is clear: restore the Trust Fund model so every dollar collected goes to retirement benefits, and remove the tax cap so everyone pays their fair share. These steps would ensure Social Security remains fully funded and secure for generations to come.
Help The Seniors Center Protect the Future of Social Security
The Seniors Center is committed to finding solutions to strengthen and protect the Social Security Trust Fund. Social Security is a contract between citizens and the government. Money deposited in the Trust Fund should only be used to pay benefits to eligible recipients.
The Seniors Center is demanding Congress finally put a stop to the careless borrowing and spending by greedy politicians that has put our Trust Fund and our secure retirement in jeopardy.
At The Seniors Center, our goal is to help seniors, and we’re doing that by protecting the future of Social Security. Retirees shouldn’t have to worry about losing their hard-earned benefits to taxes or the agendas of greedy politicians. If you agree, we invite you to sign our petition today!
