How Three Scam Artists Preyed on Rhode Island Seniors

Scam artists often use three common techniques to target seniors: preying on their fears, their love for family, and their trust. Three scam artists who stole more than $350,000 from multiple Rhode Island seniors have, according to the Department of Justice, been prosecuted for their crimes and will be sentenced in October.

These scammers called their victims and pretended to be family members in need of money. They preyed on the seniors’ fears by saying they were in danger or in jail. Then, they would ask the seniors to gather cash before sending a courier to collect it.
