This summer is expected to be a scorcher, which means it’s important for seniors to take extra precautions to avoid heatstroke. Just a few minutes in the sun can be dangerous, as can participating in strenuous activity without taking breaks or staying hydrated.
Mayo Clinic has put together a helpful guide to avoiding heatstroke, which includes the following tips:
- Wear loose, light-colored clothing — This will help you stay cool and prevent your skin from overheating.
- Drink plenty of fluids — Make sure to drink water or other fluids even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid alcohol, which can dehydrate you.
- Take breaks — If you’re going to be outside for an extended period of time, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
- Know the signs — Look out for symptoms of heatstroke, which include headache, dizziness, nausea, rapid breathing, and a fast or pounding heartbeat. If you experience any of these, get to a cool place and drink fluids immediately.
By following these tips, you can enjoy the summer without putting your health at risk.
