Fake Social Security Rumor Causes SSA Phone Call Overload

A recent fake article circulated claiming Social Security recipients would be receiving an extra $600 per month.

This fake Social Security rumor, understandably, got a lot of attention. So many people were curious about it, that the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) phone lines were flooded with calls over the past several weeks. In one day, they got 463,000 calls!

The agency has dispelled the rumor. However, it’s wise to contact the SSA about issues you’re unsure of, related to benefit changes, instances of potential fraud, and more. Going straight to the source is often the safest bet.
