Calling a Local Social Security Office? You May be in for a Surprise

Many people call their local Social Security field office for assistance. Every day, people reach out for matters like benefit applications, information updates, and many other requests. Of course, these offices stay busy, so it’s not uncommon to wait hours or even days on hold.

But a new change aims to reduce wait times. This update to the Social Security Administration’s phone system will see calls rerouted from overloaded local field offices to other field offices. The problem? These other locations may not have the information or the jurisdiction to help the caller.

While the caller may be able to connect with an actual person sooner, rather than dealing with automated systems or staying on hold, the process could actually increase the amount of time it takes to resolve their issue in some cases. What are your thoughts on this change? Will the benefits outweigh the drawbacks? Is it at least a step in the right direction?

At The Seniors Center, our goal is to help seniors, and we’re doing that by protecting the future of Social Security.
