What would it look like to expand Social Security? For the 65 million Americans who receive Social Security benefits in some form, it would mean increased benefits. However, a bill introduced to make this happen hasn’t made much progress in Congress.
According to The Intercept, the bill titled “Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust” has not yet been put to a vote in the House Ways and Means Committee. This means that there could still be some time before this bill goes to a vote in Congress. If it passes, it’s likely to be welcomed by Social Security recipients. Every individual who receives benefits would be eligible for an extra $30 a month.
For many seniors, these expanded benefits would help to cover the recent increases to Medicaid Part B. Other benefits of this proposed Social Security expansion include a higher yearly Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) and more benefits for surviving spouses.
