Social Security Overpayments Are Impacting Public Workers

Social Security overpayments have been a serious problem for a while now. Many people, both retired and not are being impacted by errors from the Social Security Administration.

One group that is affected is public workers. Both those currently in the workforce and those who are retired are feeling the strain of this problem. They’re being told that due to errors, their benefit amounts were incorrect – and in some cases, they must pay the money back.

Such an issue not only creates stress and confusion, but potential financial struggles and uncertainty. Public workers in particular are at risk for retirement issues due to two provisions impacting their payments. The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) are both controversial policies, which some say shortchange public workers from the benefits they’re owed.

Add in the headaches of overpayments and the need to correct them, and it’s a tough situation for those affected. Are you impacted by this problem? Do you work in the public sector? Let us know.
